    Mary L. Bueno has served as Director of Human Resources at Sunshine Cottage since 2005.
    Mary began her Human Resources career in 1988 when she helped start up a brand new eye glass manufacturing facility in San Antonio. With this company of 700+, she did everything from answer phones, payroll, human resources and benefits.
    Her greatest achievement was not only the start-up of this facility but insuring that the last piece of product and machinery were safely transported to their new location overseas when the company decided to relocate after 12 years in San Antonio.

    She has hours of study in various Human Resource subjects at Our Lady of the Lake University and San Antonio College. To date, she has over 25 years in the Human Resource field and has been a member of SHRM and SAHRMA for over 20 years.

  • Miriam Elizondo

    Miriam joined Sunshine Cottage in June of 2017 as the Director of Development. She graduated from University of Texas, San Antonio in 2001 with her Bachelors of Arts in Psychology. She later received her Masters of Science from Our Lady of the Lake University in 2005. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and has specialized in bilingual, trauma-informed counseling with children and adults. Miriam provided clinical training in Mexico and Nicaragua on topics including best practices in counseling and working with trauma survivors. She served as the Executive Director for an anti-violence organization for four years, where she also managed development and marketing. She received the 40 Under 40 Award in 2013 by the San Antonio Business Journal for her work in the non-profit sector and the Outstanding Alumni Award for Community Impact in 2016 from Our Lady of the Lake University. More recently she became a member of the first graduating class of the Tesoro Leadership Fellows Program in San Antonio and was presented with a Texas Resolution from the 85th Legislature for her work with vulnerable populations. Miriam’s professional goals are to support children and families in overcoming life-changing events and to work in an environment that celebrates the extraordinary resilience in children which is what brought her to Sunshine Cottage. Miriam has been married to her college sweetheart for over 10 years and has two young children – Mikey and Victoria.

  • Sara Rosales-Guerra

    Sara A. Rosales-Guerra has worked at Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children for 13 years. Prior to Sunshine Cottage, Sara was director of publications and the interim director of public relations at Our Lady of the Lake University.
    Sara earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Texas.
    Throughout her career Sara has been a member of the Association of Women in Communications and was named President of AWC in 2016-17. A published author and an award-winning designer, Sara was the recipient of the AWC Maggie Cousins Award in 2015. Sara has also held various board positions with both the International Association of Business Communicators and the Public Relations Society of San Antonio.
    She and her husband Roger enjoy the outdoors, painting and drawing, and music. They have two dogs and three cats.

  • Leslie Walter

    Leslie Walter is experienced in community outreach to medical staff including pediatricians, otolaryngologists and pediatric nurses as well as educating parents and professionals in current trends of hearing loss through health fairs and program tours. She has a demonstrated history of working in the non-profit organization management industry. Ms. Walter’s outreach efforts demonstrate strong communication skills including speaking to audiences, event planning, budgeting, nonprofit management, and strategic planning. She promotes involvement of the Sunshine Cottage Alumni Association through fundraising efforts to benefit the school by providing a student scholarship.
    Ms. Walter participates as a member in various professional organizations such as the Alexander Graham Bell Association, VP of Texas Chapter since 2006 and Chairman of the Texas AG Bell statewide conference “Advocacy: Planning for the Future” in 2008. Ms. Walter became a member of the Texas Deaf and Hard of Hearing Leadership Council: Birth to Three in 2010 and has been chairman of the PIFS sub-committee for the past five years. Ms. Walter was Membership Chair and Silent Auction Chair of The Association for Women in Communications 2015-16 and Silent Auction Chair, 2016-17.
    Leslie Walter has been employed at Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children for 26 years as a teacher, parent infant advisor and currently is Community Outreach and Alumni Relations. Ms. Walter was the Executive Director of Desert Voices, Phoenix , AZ from 1997-2000. She received a Masters of Science degree in Speech and Hearing from Washington University and a Bachelors of Art degree from Southern Methodist University.

  • Sabrina Dannheim

    Sabrina Dannheim, Director of Finance, is a Texas native and has been employed by Sunshine Cottage since 1989 where she found her calling in the world of accounting and business management for non-profits. As Director of Finance, her responsibilities include working with families regarding tuition, preparing program budgets for all departments, working with Board of Directors of the school reporting on the school’s financial position, preparing and supervising the school’s annual financial audit, and supervising her staff. Ms. Dannheim’s many achievements include the setup and ongoing management of the school’s Human Resources and Finance departments. Ms. Dannheim is proud of her long history and involvement in the incredible growth of Cottage’s highly educated staff, excellent programs, and services. Formerly, she worked in the accounting departments for the Office of Endowments at Trinity University and at Houston Baptist University.
    Ms. Dannheim has a profound hearing loss and attended only public schools in Houston, and graduated with honors. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting from Houston Baptist University and a Masters of Education Degree from University of Texas at San Antonio. A member of Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf since 1996, Ms. Dannheim has served as Treasurer of the Board on both national and local levels and has served on the planning committee for its statewide biannual state conferences. Also, she served as Co-President for the Self Help for the Hard of Hearing, now known as Hearing Loss Association of America. Additionally, she was an adjunct faculty member at San Antonio College, teaching interpreting classes and training. Ms. Dannheim has been involved in preparing and presenting at various workshops and retreats, and spoken publically and served on many panels regarding deafness. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, antiquing, and spending time with family and friends.

    Isela Fennell has over 35 years of extensive experience in the Purchasing Field.

    Before working for Sunshine Cottage, she worked 20 years for Furr's Supermarkets, where she opened many new locations and established and maintained store inventories through out the Southwest with profitable results for Retail and cost of goods. She concluded her career with Furrs as one of the District Manager's Assistant, which they were accountable for over 17 locations.

    She then moved to San Antonio, TX with her family in 2001 and has maintained her 16 year tenure with Sunshine Cottage as the Purchasing Coordinator.

  • Cindy Escobedo

    Cindy Escobedo received a Bachelor’s of Arts in Education with a concentration in special education from the University of Texas at San Antonio and later received a Master’s Degree in Deaf Education from the University of the Incarnate Word, both located in San Antonio, Texas. In October of 2010, she became a certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialist. Cindy has 25 years of teaching experience in both public and private settings. She has been an instructor at Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children in San Antonio, Texas, since 1995. During her tenure at Sunshine Cottage, Cindy has worked as a Parent Infant Advisor, early childhood educator, and elementary teacher. She has served as a lead grade level instructor for the preschool department and has served as early childhood department chair. Cindy has been a mentor to graduate students and novice educators. She is a frequent presenter/exhibitor at state and national conferences. Currently, Cindy is the Director of Educational Resources at Sunshine Cottage.

    Chris graduated from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, CA with a BFA in Digital Media. He began his career in the video game industry where he worked on titles for the Wii and Playstation 2 gaming consoles. Two of the games he helped produce are “Ultimate Duck Hunting” and “Jumper: Griffin’s Story.”
    After Chris moved back to San Antonio in 2011 he worked for a supply chain management company as their marketing manager.
    Chris came to Sunshine Cottage in the spring of 2014 where he maintains the classroom technology and the Sunshine Cottage online presence.
    He has a passion for technology and all things sci-fi.

    Sarah Carpenter received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Special Education from the University of Texas San Antonio followed by a Master’s Degree in Deaf Education and Hearing Sciences from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. She has 9 years of teaching experience in early childhood at Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children in San Antonio, Texas and has served as grade lead teacher for preschool. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Sarah has been a mentor to novice teachers and graduate students completing their student teaching. Sarah has recently begun studying for her certification as a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist, LSLS. Sarah’s passion for teaching young children is very evident when you observe in her classroom. She enjoys sharing her knowledge and experiences of working with young children who are deaf and hard of hearing. She has co-presented for numerous workshops and webinars, ranging in content from early childhood, to literacy, and the Cottage Acquisition Scales for Listening, Language, and Speech (CASLLS). Additionally, Sarah shares her knowledge enhancing educational products on behalf of Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children. Sarah and her husband, Clay, have three young girls.

    Cathy Tupa is from Corpus Christi, TX, and graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech with certification in All Level Deaf/Hard of Hearing. She received her Master of Arts degree in Special Education from The University Of Texas at San Antonio. Cathy also holds certification from The Council on Education of the Deaf.

    Cathy has been teaching in Deaf Education for 36 years. Thirty of those years have been with Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children. Prior to that, she taught in the Corpus Christi Independent School District, the Houston Independent School District, and the San Antonio Independent School District. She has taught all subjects and ages ranging from three to twenty-two years old.

  • Holly Mason

    Holly Mason is a preschool teacher at Sunshine Cottage. She was born and raised in San Antonio. Holly went to college at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX where she earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Habilitation of the Deaf with a minor in Child Development. Go Horned Frogs! Throughout her undergraduate career, Holly conducted research studying maternal interaction and vocabulary development in children with cochlear implants. She completed her student practicums in a variety of settings ranging from preschool to high school with both children with hearing loss and children with typical hearing. Holly is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Deaf Education and Hearing Science at the UT Health Science Center here in San Antonio. She served as an Associate teacher in preschool here at Sunshine Cottage during her first year of grad school.

  • Becky Schmitt

    Becky Schmitt graduated with a B.A. in speech pathology from the University of Wisconsin and received her masters degree in deaf education and elementary education from Eastern Michigan University. She received her Listening and Spoken Language certification in 2009.She has been teaching in the field of deaf education for 28 years. Becky has taught in public and private schools in Minnesota, Michigan, Arizona and Texas. She has been a presenter throughout the United States on behalf of the CASLLS for almost ten years. Becky was a member of the founding board for the San Antonio Children’s Museum which later became the Children’s Doseum. She presently serves as the grade level lead teacher for Pre-K here at Sunshine. She is married and has three grown children and three precious granddaughters.

    Nadine Diercksen is thrilled to be part of the Pre-K team this year! After college, she served as a director of children’s ministry for a number of years before becoming a classroom teacher in 2010. She holds certifications in Generalist, English as a Second Language, Special Education, and Deaf/Hard of Hearing. She recently graduated with a Masters in Deaf Education and Hearing Science. She is passionate about listening and spoken language, early childhood, and supporting families.
    Nadine is married to her best friend, Dave and is momma to Anaya. She loves cold weather (she’s from Pennsylvania!), traveling, reading, and spending time with friends and family.

    Mrs. Melanie LeBlanc is a proud pre-k teacher at Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children working in the Early Childhood Department for the past 12 years. During these years, she has taught 8 years at the Preschool level and 4 years at the Pre-Kindergarten level. Her strengths reside in her ability to build rapport with students and their families offering loving guidance and loyal support. She received her Bachelor of Science from UT Austin in Communication Sciences and Disorders and her Master’s of Deaf Education and Hearing Sciences from UT Health Science Center in San Antonio. When not in the classroom enjoying time spent with her students, she is blessed to be with her husband, Paul and their 3 children, Gabrielle, Sophie and Tomas. Her hobbies include hiking, travelling, shopping and reading books.

    Ann Deatherage is originally from West Virginia, but got here as fast as she could. She considers Sunshine Cottage her family. She is a Kindergarten teacher who loves the children and enjoys watching them grow academically. During her 36-year career, she has taught 19 years at the elementary level including 2 years in the mainstream program and 17 years at the kindergarten level. She has served as Departmental Chair for both the Elementary and Early Childhood Departments and has been the Budget chair for both departments for 7 years. In addition to teaching at Sunshine Cottage, Ann taught the speech course for the graduate Deaf Education Teacher Training Program through The University of the Incarnate Word for 9 years. She has also presented in CASLLS workshops and webinars over the past 7 years. From 1982 – 1996 Ann was the troop leader for Sunshine Cottage Girl Scout Troop 319.

    Ann has a B.S. degree in Speech Pathology and M.S. in Speech and Hearing Science (deaf Education). She is certified in Deaf Education as well as in General Education K-6.

    Christine Cadena grew up in an Air Force Family. She spent her early years in San Antonio, Texas and teenage years near Sacramento, California. Her family permanently settled in San Antonio in 1998. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Disorders from Our Lady of the Lake University in 2003 and Master of Deaf Education and Hearing Science from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio in 2005.

    Christine’s calling to Deaf Education came when the thought, “That’s what I want to do! Teach deaf children to talk!” came to her while watching a television show about a Deaf child. She has been passionate about her students and meeting their needs ever since. Christine has been with Sunshine Cottage since 2004 and has taught Pre-Kinder, Kindergarten, First, and Third Grades during her career. She is currently studying for her LSLS certification. Christine holds Texas Certificates for Deaf Education as well as General Education EC-6th grade.

  • Jennifer Shell

    Jennifer Shell happily calls San Antonio and Sunshine Cottage, “Home”. Shortly after moving to San Antonio in 2000 she received her Bachelors Degree with a major in Biochemistry at St. Mary’s University in 2004. She then received a masters in Deaf Education and Hearing Science at UTHSCSA in 2005. She began her career at Sunshine Cottage in 2005 while she was still in graduate school. Throughout her 12 years at Sunshine she has served as a Parent Advisor in the Parent Infant Program, and taught the following grade levels: “Im Turning 3” Toddler Class, Preschool, and First Grade. She received her Listening and Spoken Language Specialist certification in 2009. Ms. Shell holds certifications for Deaf Education EC-12 as well as General Education K-6. One of her favorite things about her job is growing young and older brains and facilitating relationships through mentoring graduate students as well as colleagues. She lives in Northwest San Antonio with her two energetic daughters (Ella and Aubrey) and two chocolate labs (Brownie and Cocoa).

    Alexandra Kliber received a Bachelor of Science with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies at Our Lady of the Lake University in 2013. She then received a masters in Deaf Education and Hearing Science at UTHSCSA in 2015. She started her career at Sunshine Cottage in 2015 as a kindergarten teacher and is now on her second year of teaching 1st grade. She is currently studying for her certification as a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist. She absolutely loves teaching and making learning as fun and exciting as possible. Her love of teaching is evident in the classroom. She lives in Helotes with her husband Eric, their son, Ethan, as well as their 3 dogs and a tortoise.

  • Genny Browning

    Genevieve Browning has been teaching since 2000. She is originally from St. Louis where she received her Bachelor’s degree at Fontbonne College in Elementary and Deaf Education. Genevieve received her Master’s Degree as a Reading Specialist from UTSA in 2009. She loves working in the Elementary Department at Sunshine Cottage where she has taught 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade. She has served as the Elementary Department Chair and served as a mentor to associate and student teachers while at Sunshine Cottage.
    Genny, her nickname, lived in Texas as a child. Her father, who was in the Army, was stationed at Ft. Hood. She moved back to St. Louis during her high school years. After being hired at Sunshine Cottage, Genny returned to Texas and to the beautiful city of San Antonio. Genny always wanted to become a teacher. When her youngest brother was born with a profound hearing loss and received a cochlear implant, she felt a calling to teach children with hearing impairments. Teaching children with hearing impairments has become a family affair. Her mother teaches at The Moog Oral School in St. Louis and her sister works with HI students in Dallas ISD.
    Genny loves reading and passes the love of reading to her students. She also has 2 spoiled dogs named, Addie and Charlie, who she enjoys taking for walks.

    Lindsay Vasquez received her Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies at UTSA in 2010. She then received her masters in Deaf Education and Hearing Science at UTHSCSA in 2012 while working as a graduate assistant in Pre-K followed by a position as an associate teacher in third grade at Sunshine Cottage. She left Sunshine in the fall of 2012 to become an itinerant deaf educator for Austin ISD for two years before coming back to Sunshine for a position as a pre-school teacher in 2014. Although she thoroughly enjoyed working with some of Sunshine’s tiniest students, she was called to third grade in 2015 where she has been ever since. She absolutely adores teaching third grade, and is always excited to experience new adventures with her students. She is currently pursuing her LSLS certification.

    Sandra Ramos Ibarra is a native Texan and has lived in San Antonio most of her life. She is also a veteran teacher of 32 years having taught both in public and private schools here in Texas. One of the most recent accomplishment was graduating with a Ph.D in Culture, Language and Literacy in 2016 from the University of Texas in San Antonio. She loves teaching so much that she has decide to continue her career as a Teacher/Researcher in the field of educating children with hearing loss, especially those seeking spoken language. Beside the love and passion she has for learning and teaching, she has a large family and is proud to claim ten beautiful grandchildren at this point in time.

    Olivia Bauer was born and raised in Colleyville, Texas. She made her way down to San Antonio to attend The University of Texas at San Antonio (GO RUNNERS!) graduating with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. She also obtained her teaching certificate while working on her undergrad. She’s currently working on her Master’s in Deaf Education and Hearing Sciences at The UT Health Science Center here in San Antonio. This is her second year at Sunshine Cottage, last year she was in a preschool classroom and this year she is working in second grade. Olivia will also be working with hearing impaired students at Alamo Heights High School this year.

    Kimberly Sanchez graduated from Texas A&M International University in Laredo, Texas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Disorders. Upon graduation, Kimberly fulfilled requirements to become a Licensed Assistant in Speech-Language Pathology. During her first year of graduate studies, she served as an Associate Teacher in preschool at Sunshine Cottage.     Lisa graduated from Trinity University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education of the Hearing Impaired. She has worked for Sunshine Cottage in many capacities over the last several years. Initially a classroom teacher, she enjoyed working with parents and became a Parent Infant Advisor. Lisa received a Master’s Degree in Counseling from the University of Texas, San Antonio. She then worked as the school counselor with students and families in the Day school program. Lisa is a certified LSL Auditory-Verbal Therapist and co-authored two chapters in Songs for Listening! Songs for Life! As an instructor for UT Health, Lisa helps prepare the next generation of teachers in Deaf Education and Hearing Science. Lisa and her husband Ray have four grown boys and enjoy many grandchildren! Lisa encourages new educators to “Never underestimate the power of a parent!”

    Donna Kramer graduated from Texas State University (formerly Southwest Texas State University) with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies; specializing in Special Education. She taught Special Education with North East Independent School District for 5 years. She then received her Master’s Degree in Deaf Education from the University of the Incarnate Word. She began teaching at Sunshine Cottage in 1999 and taught in the Elementary Department and the Early Childhood department before becoming a Parent Infant Advisor in the fall of 2006.
    In her spare time, Donna enjoys being with her family. She and her husband live in Blanco and have 2 daughters. They love riding horses, camping and spending time outside.

  • Lindsay Rodriguez

    Lindsay M Rodriguez, M.Ed., C.E.D., has been associated with Sunshine Cottage School since 1995. She first came from Mexico via England and Venezuela as a mother looking for an oral education for her son who is profoundly deaf and uses a cochlear implant. She has been a Parent-Infant Advisor at Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children in San Antonio since 2000.

    She is bilingual (English/Spanish) and previously worked for 16 years as an ESL teacher and textbook author/editor for Macmillan Publishers in Mexico City. Lindsay has also been trained as a Parent Advocacy Training Facilitator for the A.G.Bell Association and has given presentations on Advocacy internationally and nationally. Lindsay is a co-author of The Guide to Listening and Spoken Language: a parent-friendly, convenient checklist of information and strategies for learning to listen and talk. She also co-teaches the Best Practices in Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) Family-Centered Early Intervention course in the Master of Deaf Education and Hearing Science (MDEHS) Program at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

    Lindsay’s mission is to coach parents to advocate for their child so that their child, in turn, might advocate for him/herself.

    Adrienne Russell, M.DEHS, LSLS Cert. AVEd, is a parent-infant advisor and mentor at Sunshine Cottage School Parent-Infant Program where she has provided auditory-verbal services since 2002. Russell co-teaches “Best Practices in LSL Early Intervention” for the master’s in Deaf Education and Hearing Science program at the UT Health San Antonio. She has presented “AVT on a Shoestring”, “S.T.A.R.R.: 5 Points to Success”, “Sound Beginnings: Coaching Families with LENA feedback”, “Keep Play Going, Keep Language Growing” and webinars, Extra! Extra! It’s All About Literacy and CASLLS Pre-Verbal and Pre-Sentence listening and language development. She co-authored FAQ #90 in the”101 Frequently Asked Questions About Auditory-Verbal Practice” published in 2012.     Ana Laura Sei graduated from The University of Texas at San Antonio with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies; specializing in Bilingual Education. Growing up bilingual in a border town, she felt the necessity to maintain children’s native language and use it as an educational tool to foster second language acquisition. Shortly after earning her Bachelor’s degree, she pursued her Master’s Degree in Deaf Education and Hearing Sciences from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, graduating in May 2012. She has been a part of Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children since August 2010, where she has worked as a graduate assistant, teacher assistant, and now serves families as a Parent Infant Advisor.

    Julianna Wanek graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders, specializing in Deaf Education. She went on to receive her Masters in Deaf Education and Hearing Science from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. During her coursework, she realized her love for working with families in early intervention and became a parent infant advisor at Sunshine Cottage in January of 2015.

    Julianna is a Certified Educator of the Deaf by the state of Texas and is currently seeking certification in auditory verbal therapy as a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist. She lives in Boerne with her husband, Tyler, their two dogs, Tucker and Cory, and their cat, Major.

    Annabel Noyola graduated from University of Texas San Antonio with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in early childhood. She then received her Master’s Degree in Deaf Education and Hearing Science from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. She began teaching at Sunshine Cottage as an associate teacher during her graduate studies. Annabel taught Preschool for three years before becoming a Parent Infant Advisor. She is working to be certified as a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist in Auditory Verbal Therapy.

    Annabel enjoys spending time with family and friends. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, working out and playing volleyball.

  • Janeth Gaddy

    Janeth Gaddy was born and raised in Colombia, South America, where she graduated with a BA in Foreign Languages from the Universidad Industrial de Santander and an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia. She also worked in Colombia for four years as a certified ESL teacher.

    After moving to the USA, Janeth lived in Wisconsin where she got her Preschool Credentials from The Registry, and worked as a Preschool teacher for several years. She later moved to North Carolina where she became ATA certified as a translator, and was able to work as an interpreter for the court system and for the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

    Marriage and the birth of a hearing impaired child brought her to Texas where she found Sunshine Cottage and the Parent Infant Program. She was a stay at home mom for several years until Sunshine Cottage had an opening in the Parent Infant Program that she and her family loved so much. She became the Administrative Assistant to PIP where she has been able to help families walk the same path that she and her family have walked. She is also able to help Spanish speaking families navigate Sunshine Cottage and translate documents for them.

    In her free time, she enjoys reading, cooking, crafting and teaching her children new skills. She and her husband have two daughters who attend Sunshine Cottage School and who cannot think of a better place to be.

  • Andrea Harvey

    Andrea Harvey received a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences with a Minor in Family Studies/Counseling from Texas Tech University. She received her Masters degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Texas Tech University and practiced Audiology for 6 years obtaining extensive experience working with ear, nose and throat physicians. Because of her love of working with children and their families, she started working at Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children 19 years ago. As a pediatric audiologist at Sunshine Cottage, she performs diagnostic hearing evaluations on children of all ages. She also provides hearing aid and cochlear implant management as part of the support team for children at Sunshine Cottage. Mrs. Harvey is also the Audiology department director at Sunshine Cottage and is a current member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

  • Jean Boller

    Jean Boller received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Communication Disorders from Texas State University in 1988. She received her Master of Science Degree in Audiology from the University of Oklahoma in 1990. After working in a community speech and hearing center, hearing aid dispensing practice and otology practice she came to Sunshine Cottage in August 1995. Her favorite part of working at Sunshine Cottage is working collaboratively with the teachers and staff at Sunshine Cottage as well working closely with the families of young children. As a pediatric audiologist at Sunshine Cottage she provides diagnostic hearing evaluations including auditory evoked potential testing as well as hearing aid, cochlear implant and FM management. Jean is a member of the American Speech Language and Hearing Association and the American Cochlear Implant Alliance.

  • Logan Horner

    Dr. Horner has been working as a licensed audiologist for eight years. She received her Bachelor's of Science in Speech and Hearing Sciences in May of 2005 and her Doctorate of Audiology in May of 2009. Both of her degrees were from Texas Tech University Health Science Center. She is clinically certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. She first began her career at Sunshine Cottage as an audiology intern. After completion of her internship, she was blessed with being able to stay on as a full-time audiologist for eight years. In July of 2016, she decided to spread her professional wings and worked at a cochlear implant clinic in San Antonio. She enjoyed working with adults and children at this clinic, but her wings carried her back to Sunshine Cottage. Dr. Horner was humbly excited for the opportunity to return to Sunshine Cottage in July of 2017. She will provide the full range of diagnostic rehabilitative services, including Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) testing for infants, Cochlear Implant assessments and mapping, Bone Anchored Hearing Aid assessment and programming, and traditional hearing aid programming. Dr. Horner is also an Adjunct Professor with the Deaf Education and Hearing Science Program in the School of Medicine at the UT Health-San Antonio. She feels privileged to help future deaf educators understand the intricacies of audiology. Dr. Horner truly feels blessed to be working with the families and staff of Sunshine Cottage. She believes walking alongside parents and children with hearing loss at Sunshine Cottage is a gift from above.

  • Marci Foster

    Dr. Marcia Foster received a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Disorders from Abilene Christian University and a Doctorate of Audiology degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. She began serving the children and families at Sunshine Cottage as a 4th year Audiology Intern in August 2004 and as a Pediatric Audiologist in August 2005 to present. To date, Dr. Foster has presented her collective research on the importance of early identification of hearing loss and the results of early intervention in children at conferences all over the country. In addition, she has presented on various pediatric and educational audiology topics locally and within the state of Texas. She is also a member of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. In years past she has even been known to play piano at Sunshine Cottage School’s annual Christmas Play. Dr. Foster absolutely loves working with children and families.

    Dr. Jones received a Bachelor of Science degree in Communicative Disorders from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and a Doctor of Audiology from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. She did her 4th year internship at Sunshine Cottage School during the 2005 – 2006 school year. From 2006 to 2009, she worked as a pediatric audiologist at The Center for Hearing and Speech in Houston. In 2009, she returned to Sunshine Cottage School. At Sunshine Cottage, she enjoys working with the students and their families. She performs diagnostic ABRs, diagnostic audiological evaluations on children from the community, cochlear implant programming, hearing aid fitting and troubleshooting, and FM fitting and troubleshooting. She is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. She has given presentations on the best practices in pediatric audiology at several professional conferences in Texas.

    Stacy has been working as a speech-language pathologist at Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children since August 2009. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Ouachita Baptist University in 2007 and a Master’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology from Gallaudet University in 2009. Stacy is currently working toward her Listening and Spoken Language Specialist certification.
    Stacy has supervised graduate students seeking a Master’s level degree in speech-language pathology since 2014. She has presented at numerous national and state speech-language pathology conventions teaching others about working with Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing students in an auditory-oral environment. Outside of her regular roles and responsibilities within the speech and language department, Stacy has been a co-director of the school wide Christmas play since 2012. She assisted in the creation of two speech therapy applications, Speech That Works and InTense. Stacy also collaborated with Sunshine Cottage staff in the creation of the electronic version of the Cottage Acquisition Scales for Listening Language and Speech and has presented several webinars on behalf of Sunshine Cottage.

    Jessie has been working as a Speech-Language Pathologist at Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children since February 2006. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Louisiana Tech University in 2003 and a Master’s Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Louisiana State University in 2005. Jessie became a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist in 2009.
    Since becoming a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist, Jessie has mentored several other professionals who are seeking the same certification. She has also been a clinical supervisor for graduate level students seeking a Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology since 2010.
    Jessie has assisted in the creation of two speech therapy applications, Speech That Works and InTense, and provided the voice over recordings for both. In addition to this, Jessie has presented at numerous national and state conventions educating other speech-language pathologists about working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing.     Courtney has been working as a Speech-Language Pathologist at Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children since August 2016. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from The University of Akron in 2011 and a Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from The University of Akron in 2016. While in graduate school, Courtney was awarded The U.S. Department of Education Auditory Verbal Certification Grant. She co-authored a chapter for the 2016 EDHI eBook.
    Currently, Courtney is in the process of acquiring her Listening and Spoken Language Specialist certification. She is an adjunct professor at The University of Texas Health San Antonio for the Master of Deaf Education and Hearing Science Program. Courtney has presented at national and state speech-language pathology conventions sharing knowledge with professionals about working with children who are deaf and hard of hearing.

  • Lori Leal

    Lori Leal is the librarian at Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children. She began serving as the librarian in 2013.
    Before becoming the librarian at Sunshine Cottage, Lori was a classroom teacher for 16 years. She has taught Kindergarten, 1st grade, 3rd grade, and 4th grade. Her teaching career began in Corpus Christi before moving to San Antonio in 2002. From 2002-2013, she was a teacher in Northside ISD. Lori has a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, a Master of Education in Administration from Lamar University, and a Master of Library Science from Sam Houston State University.

    She and her husband have a very spoiled black cat named Simon. In her free time, she loves to READ, visit different restaurants and food trucks around town, spend time with her family and friends, and surf the internet looking for cool websites and iPad apps to use with her students.

    Giovi Carrola is the Art Educator at Sunshine Cottage School, and is beginning her 23rd year at Sunshine! Prior to teaching here, Giovi taught Art at
    Blessed Sacrament School and St. Paul's School. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art and her Texas Teaching Certificate from UTSA.
    As an artist, Giovi has participated in several shows including: "The One & Only", "Show your Colors", Mini Art Museum's (MAM) exhibit, and participates regularly in OPTNA Art Stroll. She has been a featured artist in ArtPace's, "Chalk it Up" event, and is an artist in the Artomat collective, "Artists in Cellophane" as well as "Food for Thought" art zine. Giovi also teaches private Art classes in the summer at her studio.

    She is actively involved in Art volunteerism. Serving underprivileged kids and/or those who do not have Art programs in school, Giovi has coordinated projects with Girls, Inc., Martinez Street Women's Center, Spare Parts and was a lead artist/teacher in "The Escuela Project" with the Guadalupe Cultural Art Center.

    Giovi is married and has two daughters in college. When she is not teaching, she enjoys travel, photography and nature.

    She is a graduate of the University of the Incarnate Word, Certified in Action Based Learning, and a two time recipient of the Ford Salute to Education Grant.

    Growing up, Laura was an avid participant in sporting activities, and at University decided to dedicate her professional life to sharing her passion of physical fitness with children.

    Arriving here in 1990, Laura started the first Physical Education Program for Sunshine Cottage, and continues to educate and motivate students to enjoy and participate in all kinds of physical activities and sports.

    Emily Stark, School Counselor, has been employed at Sunshine Cottage since 2005. Her successful academic career started at Sunshine Cottage when she was identified with a severe to profound hearing loss at the age of three. A mentor who was deaf and had a degree in school counseling inspired Mrs. Stark at a very young age. This inspiration sparked a strong desire to work with deaf youth, be a role model, and offer guidance and reassurance.

    Mrs. Stark graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a BS in Family and Child Development. She went on to pursue a MA in Professional Counseling at Texas State University. She is a member of the Phi Upsilon Omicron Honor Society, Chi Sigma IOTA Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society International, Texas Counseling Association, American School Counseling Association and Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

    As the School Counselor, Mrs. Stark is dedicated to providing individual and group support to all the students at Sunshine Cottage. She teaches Guidance lessons that encompass a wide variety of topics such as character education, social skills, friendship skills, and advocacy. She works closely with the school social worker to provide responsive services to parents and teachers as well.

    When Mrs. Stark is not at work, she enjoys spending time with her wonderful husband and three kids. She loves watching a good movie, traveling, spending summers in the mountains and tackling home improvement projects.
